Our Story

Kammerballetten is a dance company based in Copenhagen, which creates and presents new ballets by contemporary choreographers. The works are always performed with live chamber music played by the musicians in the award-winning ensemble Trio Vitruvi, which founded the company in 2018.

A substantial grant from The Augustinus Foundation inspired Trio Vitruvi to pursue the development of new classical chamber music and ballet. By commissioning new works from choreographers for some of the world’s most talented dancers, Kammerballetten has grown quickly and is working towards becoming a full-time company that constantly pushes the envelope - nationally as well as internationally.

Kammerballetten’s purpose is the creation of exciting and relevant works which can push the boundaries that define classical music and ballet.

Kammerballetten is directed by Alexander McKenzie - also a composer and pianist - and co-directed by dancer at the Royal Danish Ballet Emma McKenzie.

Kammerballetten is driven by a love for the intensity and intimacy in music and dance, as well as an excitement about the creation of new works.

In 2020 Kammerballetten was awarded the most prestigious theatre-award in Denmark - a “Reumert”, and has again been nominated for the award in 2023.

Kammerballetten has during the past 5 years performed in USA, Taiwan, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Finland and throughout Denmark.

In 2023 Kammerballetten presents four world premieres of new works by contemporary choreographers with dancers from the Royal Danish Ballet and international guest stars.
